Gratitude in the Overflow
By Java Barker | JB.XO
🌫️ A Moment That Took My Breath
I pressed play without expecting anything extraordinary — just music filling the background of my evening. But as the service unfolded, the atmosphere began to thicken. And just past the 1:17:00 mark, something in me stilled.
Steve Epting stepped forward. His voice carried the weight of lived testimony — not theatrics, not performance, but presence. The kind of presence that makes you sit up straighter without even realizing it.
Then the chords began. That unmistakable opening progression of “Total Praise.” A sound that doesn’t ask permission — it simply rises, and with it, so do you.
The moment the choir lifted their voices, something inside me opened. I felt a surge move through my body — warmth, trembling, release. And before I could name it, tears were already arriving.
Not because I was sad —
but because gratitude overtook me so quickly, so fully, that the only language my spirit had left was tears.
And as those tears fell, I realized something else — the warmth of that moment almost felt like a covering in the midst of the freezing weather outside. As fall turns to winter, and the air grows sharper, moments like this feel like grace wrapping itself around you. A reminder that even as seasons shift, God still knows how to send warmth where you need it most.
I wasn’t expecting God.
But He came anyway.
But He came anyway.
💡 When a Speech Becomes a Turning Point
What struck me most was how human Steve Epting’s words were — steady, honest, unforced. He wasn’t trying to perform; he was speaking from a place that had clearly been shaped by valleys, victories, and visitation. His voice carried a kind of grounded conviction that made you feel like he wasn’t just addressing the room — he was speaking into it.
I’ve watched this full performance many times. It has become a kind of sanctuary for me — a place I return to when I need grounding, comfort, or simply a reminder that God still moves through sound. The entire service holds its own beauty, but tonight… something was different. The speech, and then the rise into “Total Praise,” landed deeper than usual — more emotive, more piercing, more personal.
As he talked about God’s sustaining presence, something in me shifted. His words weren’t loud, but they were true — and truth has a way of finding the cracks in you, the places you’ve quietly held together.
And then, without pause or pretense, the choir rose.
When “Total Praise” began, it didn’t feel like music — it felt like transcendence. A lifting. A breaking open. A reminder of what it sounds like when a room aligns with heaven.
And as the harmonies swelled, gratitude began replaying my life with startling clarity:
Moments I was kept.
Moments I was carried.
Moments I didn’t realize were mercy until much later.
Moments that should have broken me, but didn’t.
That is when the tears came. Not from sadness — but from the sudden recognition that God has been faithful in ways I never slowed down long enough to see.
🎵 The Sound That Opens the Soul
“Total Praise” has a way of lifting the heart before the mind can explain why.
Those harmonies rise like prayer.
Those chords gather your scattered places
and pull them into worship.
And Steve Epting…
his closing words carried a truth that met me exactly where I was:
not in perfection,
not in performance,
but in availability.
In that moment, I watched a room full of people unify under one intention —
to honor the God who keeps showing up.
To praise the God who has never failed His part.
To witness glory through voices offered as vessels.
It wasn’t just music.
It wasn’t just emotion.
It was a holy reminder:
God sees me.
God loves me.
God sustains me.
And the tears came again.
✨ Gratitude as Worship
What I felt wasn’t just appreciation for a beautiful song —
it was worship rising out of gratitude.
Worship born from the awareness
that I am still here
because God said yes to my life again today.
Gratitude turns ordinary moments into altars.
It transforms watching into receiving
and listening into awakening.
It reminds me to offer everything —
my work,
my breath,
my becoming —
in God’s name.
Not only the grand gestures.
But the quiet yeses.
The unseen effort.
The silent rebuilding.
The choosing to continue.
🙏🏽 Held in the Overflow
I let myself sit in it.
No rushing.
No explaining.
No resisting.
Just breathing —
just being held by the gratitude that overflowed without warning.
And maybe that’s what God wanted for me in that moment:
not productivity,
not planning,
not performance —
but presence.
A reminder that I am still carried.
Still covered.
Still becoming.
If you’re reading this,
I hope you allow yourself to feel it, too —
that quiet, overwhelming truth that
you are here on purpose,
kept on purpose,
and loved far beyond your understanding.
With gratitude overflowing and tears that speak what words cannot,
